2018 KTM Freeride E-XC and the Future of E-Mobility
Since ADVMoto couldn't be in Austria for the 2018 KTM Freeride E-XC Media Launch, we did the next best thing and attended their digital media launch. KTM's global marketing team prepped a press conference that livestreamed to the USA that covers the new motorcycle, as well as a presentation from KTM Group CEO Stefan Pierer regarding the future of E-mobility for KTM.
While the presentation focused on the new 2018 KTM Freeride, Stefan Pierer and his marketing and development team also went in depth about the history of E-mobility and what it means for KTM. The Austrian brand aims to be the innovator in electric, 2-wheel technology and plans to, over the next several years, launch more electric motorcycles, hybrids, and electric assisted bicycles. New Husqvarna brand bicycles will also be announced in the near future.
KTM plans to put at least half of their funding into developing the new future E-models, including youth models to compete with entry level 50cc bikes. Combustion 2t and 4t engines are still their bread and butter, and KTM doesn't believe they'll be completely replaced within the next 20-30 years. What they do expect is hybrid engines to become popular over the next 10 years. Thanks to a focus on electric development, KTM was able to hire 500 new employees for a total of 5,600 employees globally. We can expect to see KTM become more prominent in the bicycle world, with new concepts such as a cross-over "X-Bicycle".
"E-mobility will change the landscape of travel in the future, this is only the beginning." - Stefan Pierer
The press conference also went in depth about the development of the Freeride E-XC. KTM wanted to capitalize on the growing mountain bike segment and produced a motorized bicycle in 2007. It wasn't until 2012 that the Freeride E was put to the test, then in 2014 the production model was presented. Up until now, the KTM Freeride E has been unavailable to the US. The distribution team also plans to launch new ownership options, including leasing so that new owners can get onto the Freeride E-XC on a budget, and stay op top of the latest technology.
2018 KTM Freeride Fast Facts:
- The release of the current Freeride E-XC took so long because it took 10 years for KTM to find the right experts to develop the best product.
- In 2014, KTM started producing the Freeride E with watercooling to help manage the ECU of the bike, which would overheat after two or three battery swaps in a row.
- A few concepts were at the top of the R&D list while developing the chassis. The battery had to be easily replaceable and takes about the same amount of time as filling up a normal motorcycle gas tank. The frame was initially made of all steel to support the weight of the motor and battery. In order to increase balance and have a low center of gravity, the whole battery needed to be moved back. During the process, KTM decided to use an aluminum cross point to shave weight.
- The KTM Freeride E-XC is A1 compliant and user friendly enough for beginners, but packs enough power to keep experienced riders entertained. The 2018 bike comes with an improved battery with a capacity that is increased by 50%. The power output is similar to their 250xc - 25hp and 31tq. Most importantly, the torque is available immediately, making it a capable off-road machine. Current ride time is an estimated 1.5 - 2hrs.
- Three modes are available on the Freeride E-XC, but only one of them will regenerate the battery. The R&D team felt it was necessary to retain the light, free-floating feel as much as possible. Eco Mode will regenerate the battery during certain situations, like coasting downhill, Standard Mode is a mid-level, energy saving setting, and Advance Mode unlocks full-power.
- The 2018 Freeride E-XC also receives some style updates, including a new front fender and fork protectors, exc front light, and revised graphics. The new bike also gets a wider handlebar with attachable bark busters, revised suspension, and upgraded brakes.
- The Freeride E-XC is not street-legal in North America.
- Pricing starts at $8,299
Mass production starts after Christmas holiday. The USA will receive limited quatities in select dealerships. For more information visit KTM's website at KTM.com
